Well, got the trunk mostly finished. Not much more welding left until I get the POR15 applied to the underneath.

Progress:

Did a rocker guard treatment on the inside of the rocker before I seal it up.

They are self-drilling screws and because I didn't feel like welding all the way around. This isn't a structural area. What you don't see is underneath there is an "H" pattern 3/4" square tubing support member underneath. It's silicone sealed all the way around the screwed area so no water can get in.

Very nice Ryan!
Did you weld the flat trunk floor in? What material is it?

Mine is just pop riveted and silicone to keep the weather out.

I welded the rear, and self-tappers hold it down. It's silicone sealed underneath.

The driver's side rocker is all sealed up. Also, thanks to a local buddy, had my fuel sending units blasted and a quick shot of paint on the top to make them pretty, then reassembled.

Nice work, all looks damn good. As soon as I can get some heat in the garage I will start my welding!

Well, finally got the back end put back together for the most part. It's quite dirty on the inside, but that will all be cleaned up when the wheels get back on the ground.

Now it's time to get her ready for the POR15 treatment, and start bolting things back on.

I don't think I did too bad for one handed flux core welding. I don't have a helmet, just that cheap shield they give you in the Mastercrap welder box. I guess the real test will be after she gets bumped around a bit.

Nice work buddy. What was your main reason for doing the trunk floor, just to get more room?

I take it you welded the crossmember to stiffen it up?

Adam, I did the trunk floor to shave some metal out of the car, and make it a little more streamlined. The ends of the crossmember were rotten, I cut out the bad metal and rewelded in some new steel.

Roman, heck yes! I have no control at all with this welder, it's only adjustable between min/max voltage and wire speed. I usually look like a dog fuckin' a football under the car trying to get in a decent spot to weld and not get it all over me, but alas, you can only do so much with a cheap shitty welder.

Works though....

Looks good! I hate those fluxcore welders somedays. They work ok but they spatter so much half the time your pulling slag out of you elbow.

I asume that the 2gs have a depressed spare tire well.

Nice job!

Do yourself a favour and pick up a $75 auto darkening helmet off Amazon, no they are not something for a pro to use but for the hobby welder it makes the job 100x easier. Even with a flux core you can do a far better job if you can see what you are doing and be comfortable while doing it.

I've been keeping my eye on when Princess Auto has one that goes on sale. The Auto darkening ones usually drop down to $50.

Some new goodies from RTM Racing today.

I'm replacing my muffler only because we've got a local cop who has a hate on for tuners. I'm going as stealth as possible. A Vibrant 3" in/Dual 3" out flat black should do the trick.

Other trinkets include some new bushings for the subframe and the diff, some Amsoil 5W30 Synthetic, and a few other doo-dads.

Gotta get the paint done under the car and the rest should slap together rather quickly!

RTM has rear subframe bushings for 2gs already?!

Sounds like you're only a handful of manhours from driving that beast!

Not really, we were just unloading some Torque Solutions 2g bushings on a few poor souls. The RTM version is still a good way off.

Finally got the subframe shot. I used DOM16 which is pretty much the same as POR15. Turned out pretty well. It was sprayed with an HVLP gun.

Looking good man!

What are you going to do for holding the bottom of the rad?

Haven't welded on the tabs for that yet, but I will be using some 3/16" steel for those tabs to make sure it is good and strong.

Is that just a donor rad support from a different car or new steel?

Looks like new square tube to me, particularly given the fact that it's tabless/supportless.

It's actually strips of 16ga steel welded together to form a box. Your car is never too far gone as long as you have a VIN tag and a welder. wink

Didn't look quite like square tube, that would make sense tongue

Wow, I thought my rad support was gone.

Looking good Ryan.

The last coat of paint went on underneath tonight. The Rad support is all painted up and new tabs welded on. Everything is on the end stages of being ready to assemble. I have a bunch of stuff needing to get to powdercoat, but other than that, she's looking like a mid-May roll date.

Pics to come soon, I have to charge my camera.

Sounds awesome. Can't wait to see it all back together and as spiffy as ever. Looking forward to seeing what she'll do this year!

Here's a little update.

So the underside is painted and ready to be re-assembled. I started a small wire tuck and moved the fusebox. The rad support is all built, painted and assembled. I have to buy some new bolts for the front crossmember to bolt up to the rad support.

I'll let the pictures speak for themselves.
