Yeah yeah sure...
Next time your clutch explodes or you snap your center spool, we'll see who's talking.
Oh wait... you'd have to be drag racing to do that right???

LOL.. but for real... no. Nothing wrong with the automatic, sure it's a little less "fun" as it were, but a lot less hassles and much easier to mod than a manual. Less moving parts = Less Breakage.
And Drag Racing is for real men.

I would have thought that an auto had more moving parts with all the clutch packs and valve stuff. no?

When I say moving parts, I mean hard parts. Shifting is pressure driven with balls and springs.
Compared to a manual transmission with all the gears, synchros, Forks, rails, etc. the automatic transmission as a bit less moving parts.

I'm with Ryan on this one. He actually has the exact car I would love to find...a 2g AWD Automatic at a good price!! And I wouldn't let ANYONE bash me about driving an automatic. I am quite comfortable in my own skin. Hell, I drive a SCOOTER!! If anyone knows of another 2g AWD Automatic at a good price, pm me please

Compared to a manual transmission with all the gears, synchros, Forks, rails, etc. the automatic transmission as a bit less moving parts. Automatics have way more moving parts! spool valves, regulators, pistons, seals, releif valves, clutches, bands, servos, diaphram springs, planeraty gearset, Hydrulic circuits(input, held, outputs)just to name a few. Theres alot more things that could go wrong with an automatic. Build it right, proper converter selection, proper suspension set up will net you with an unbeatble dragcar. Automatics are more complicated to rebuild. They also require alot more specility tools. Unless your rebuilding alot of them, better off sending it to a shop.

""Shifting is pressure driven with balls and springs. Compared to a manual transmission with all the gears, synchros, Forks, rails, etc. the automatic transmission as a bit less moving parts."" ^^^, By that rationalization, I definatly don't want an Auto, way more things to go wrong with all those balls & springs . Sorry Ryan, men who have standards, drive standards. 1G's forever

Yeah yeah... you can all scoff if you want. But when you miss that 3-4 shift and blow your flywheel apart, I'll be at the other end of the track waiting. Anyone want to bracket race against me?

Ok, this is a little story that was emailed to me that I think fits this auto vs. manual story fairly well:
A C-130 was lumbering along when a cocky F-16 flashed by. The jet jockey decided to show off.
The fighter jock told the C-130 pilot, 'watch this!' and promptly went into a barrel roll followed by a steep climb. He then finished with a sonic boom as he broke the sound barrier. The F-16 pilot then asked the C-130 pilot what he thought of that?
The C-130 pilot said, 'That was impressive, but watch this!' The C-130 droned along for about 5 minutes and then the C-130 pilot came back on and said: 'What did you think of that?'
Puzzled, the F-16 pilot asked, 'What the heck did you do?' I didn't see anything.
The C-130 pilot chuckled. 'I stood up, stretched my legs, walked to the back, took a leak, then I got a cup of coffee and a cinnamon bun.'
When you are young and foolish, speed and flash may seem a good thing. When you get older and smarter, comfort and dull is not such a bad thing!
Older folks understand this one.

Yes!! I get it Ziggy. Ryan has to go, take a leak, drink some cofe, come back, and then get a man's trany.
That's what I was trying to tell him, minus the cofe and the leak....

I hate you all. Except you Ziggy, I'll always like you. You are my parts Santa. Manny... I hope some flimsy stock coolant hose breaks on you again ruining your very nicely put together motor. Malcolm, Brandon is coming to my place on Saturday to do a parts swap and trade me a BNIB MITSUBISHI VALVE COVER!!!. You should join him since I've been wanting you to pop by for a while! I'll be the bigger man, throw it in D and Drive away. More pics you guys!!!

Ok, so I'm guessing either Rob, Steve or Jeff stepped in on that one, and this could go on forever.

I'm with Ryan and Ziggy. I always thought auto DSM's were the devil until I went onto the Link forums and saw how many people are running auto's, and how many others want to be like them.
When you start making a ton of power, there's nothing better than a decent auto that can harness all that power.
Not trying to start a war, just saying how much of a difference they are once they're done up right.

Yup, I drive it every day. Drove to PEI for the August long weekend this year. Even managed just under 9L/100km with a passenger and race tires+gear in the back. Why would it break? If anything did break, I'd fix it. If I was in Indiana and it was something serious like a blown motor, I'd go to the local U-haul, rent a van and car hauler, and tow the sucker home! I make sure I do preventative maintenance, since I abuse the car, and having a failure put me into a wall is not something I plan on happening. If I hit a wall, it'll be driver error not car failure! I've had a couple of minor things happen. In 2005 I had an ECU start failing (misfire) while I was at the track in St. Eustache, QC. Made it home. In 2006 I had a front wheel bearing spin when I was in Indiana. Brake feel was terrible but made it home. When I was at Calabogie (out by Ottawa) in Sept. I had my main coolant pipe pop out of the water pump and dump my coolant out while on track. The mounting bolt was awal for some reason and it's hard to put a bolt in with the manifold in place. I fixed that with some borrowed safety wire, competed the next day and made it home: It's all part of the adventure!!
