If you look at the RIV website you will find a lovely little notation that pretty much ALL 2008 models built after September 01 2007 are inadmissible to Canada, something in regards to factory installed immobilizers that makes pretty much every 08 domestically built car SOL. Must be an expensive part to justify 10-15K increases on the Canadian model bitch

That's why I will never buy new. That's complete horseshit and anyone with half of a brain knows it.

"You have to pay $15,000 more for this car because you are Canadian."

Can we start a lawsuit against this racial issue?

Too many rich idiots will still buy new cars because they can and it barely impacts them.

That's just for the GM/Mitsu models that don't have these immobilizers. Other models, like BMW's, are fine.

I skimmed through the relevent documentation and, to summarize, this action is being taken to try to cut the amount of 'joy-riding' done by drivers of stolen cars, primarily youths. (This actually makes some sense.) They see that a standard alarm system can be bypassed relatively easily (how many people have had their cars stolen/broken into?) and that only a vehicle immobilizer system capable of disconnecting the starter, ignition and fuel systems will properly do the job. I didn't read the standard, but they might even mandate the use of the new 'coded keys' for the system.

You're not SOL, though. They do list 4 aftermarket systems that, when installed according to 'Installation Protocol Blah blah blah", will meet their standards.

For other models, there are other considerations which cause their listing, but most can be gotten around.

FYI: Manitoba seems to be the impetus for these new regs. Take a look at their Traffic Act. They've just passed a law that would REQUIRE you, if you moved to Manitoba, to install one of these immobilizers in your car if it's a high-risk vehicle. A 1990 Talon TSi AWD qualifies. They do mention they'll install it for free, but you probably pay more for state-run insurance in that province... You don't have one, you don't get re-insured or re-registered.

So, forget about actually pursuing and throwing the book at car thieves. They'll just charge honest people to make their cars harder to steal!

Can you post a link to that, Troy?

I can't see why they wouldn't allow it to be retrofitted, like the DRLs.

Read this page for more info on the immobilizer issue.

It does talk about the possibility of adding an aftermarket immobilizer that complies with CMVSS114 (like the Mastergard units).

But that only applies if the car is listed on the RIV site in the ADMISSIBLE column with the '~' modifier.

If you look at the current list for Mitsu, this is fine for every 2008 model except the EVO. The EVO still shows as "INADMISSIBLE".

So Mitsu canada has seen to it that the aftermarket immobilizer approach won't work on the EVO.

Scoobaru has done the same thing, as per a letter sent from the VP of Subaru Canada to Transport Canada. The RIV site isn't updated yet to reflect, but it will be.

The top he/she in charge at Transport Canada who makes vehicles admissable/inadmissable owns a Talon, and doesnt want the EVO admissable, because he's affraid the EVO will just take his Talon for a walk in the park.

The man/women just loves his Talon too much.

This is not a true story. Just a thought!

Well, the EVO is listed for 2003 to 2008, which would invariably be because of the FMIC thing (which never made any sense to me in the first place). The EVO X will be released as a 2009 model, no?

Not that they can't just slam a model. The new Pontiac Vibe is on the 'inadmissable' list, no reason given, and I can't see how it's different from the Canadian model other than the addition of the immobilizer.

If you can get proof of a letter sent for something like this, with NO reason to ban a car other than non-compliance with a Canadian law (or a really silly one), it's time to write your MLA to ask our government is looking out for our safety, or the deep pockets of business?

Jeff provided the links that should get most of the info you need, but I can supply them if needed. I just Googled the Transport Canada amendment number and read the amendments, then Googled the installation protocol that Jeff listed to get the list of units.

Looks like Transport Canada was tired of being dicked around by the manufacturers. They were being lied to about what immobilizer was in which car, so they are basically saying "screw it, as long as it has AN immobilizer in it, we're good to go!!!"

This is huge for anyone planning on buying a new car in the US.

I wouldn't say it's THAT strong... And it hasn't passed yet.

MasterGard is still complaining that Transport Canada will still believe a manufacturer if it tells them that no aftermarket immobilizer will work, true or not.

There's normally a 60 wait before something like that gets in the rule book, but they're fast-tracking it to be done by December 15th. That's pretty good news.

Is there anyone else here considering an Evo?

Assuming I can import it, I plan on buying the MR as soon as it comes available. Can't justify paying $50K+ for it, but if it's <$40US, I'm all over it.

This is a surprise...how? The last generation was slower than the previous, in skilled hands anyway.

I do see where they're going. The hard-core enthusiast ONLY wanted either. A street-legal rally car.

To everyone else, how many people know rally cars to see one drive by? How often will drivers use the limits of their performance without getting tickets, or ending up in ditches because of inexperience? The big question for me, when I seriously asked it, "Would I be willing to spend that much on a fast econobox over something else with tons of luxury features, and not to much less power? (Re: BMW, Audi, Subaru Legacy, etc.)

They'll end up going where they can make the most money.

It's a surprise because Mitsu has been saying that it's only slower in straight line acceleration, but it'll actually be faster around the track. It turns out that's (probably) not true.

You and Mitsu can justify it any way you want (increased comfort, broader appeal and marketability, blah blah), but the sorts of compromises they've made aren't what I want out of a car.

It's still a kick ass vehicle and I'll probably own one some day, but it's a little disappointing to me.

QFT! Bottom line, that's what it's about. (Pun intended)

The good news is that it's likely to be very tunable, so before long, someone will be making 400 hp with a tune and exhaust. So, it'll be all things to all people. Let's just hope Mitsu built that possibility in like they did with the 4G63.

To each his own, Jeff. My plan is to grab an EVO VI if I have the finances available at the time. If I'm going to have one of that ilk, it should be the most potent, most RAW of them all.

Assistance is nice, but I don't want the car to drive for me. Although I might make an allowance for the new Nissan if I ever won the lottery. wink

Once you go beyond that, heck you might as well pamper yourself with a few luxuries...

Even if you financed this thing for 4 years you'd be paying over $800 a month in payments. Who the hell can afford this? I guess those who can will buy. I just don't see how it can be worth that much, its much like real estate, sh!t box houses are going well over $250,000 even in small towns.

I just called the local Satan. No word on Cdn pricing yet, at least at that specific location. When I dropped in last week, the sales manager told me he expected them to 'start' at mid-fifties. I told him, if that was the case, not to bother to order any in, because NOBODY would pay that for the GSR. I can see them starting at ~$47k and another $5k for the MR.

At my local Mitsubishi dealer, the salesman said that they were going to start at 50g canadian.

He also said that nothing in its class will touch it, and that nothing that has been made to compete against it will touch it. I mentioned the recent magazine tests, and how the new STI beats it, and the older version is actually quicker. The salesman blatantly said that the magazines were wrong, because mitsubishi had done independent testing.

I kind of had a good chuckle about it all...

I've been reading through the various forums where people are discussing the pricing today, and I must be the only one that thinks $34k isn't too bad! Although maybe my perspective is a little warped now that $1 USD = $1 CAD?

Sure you could previously get an EVO for less than $30k, but that was for a stripped out model with no power windows or a radio. Considering the 2Gs were selling for $30+K here when they were new, a few grand more for a more modern car aint bad!

It will be *very* interesting to see how the Canadians price this. If it's >40k they really shouldn't bother.

The 1995 I got sold for $36K. As much as I like it, it is way more that I'd like to pay for that bloddy thing.

I'm anxiously waiting for an official Canadian release (still skeptical) and hoping for not more that a mid 40ies pricing for the 5 speed model (do not care about an Automatic Paddle shift Slush Box). I do not plan to buy new but might looking into a getting a used one in a few years.

I'm convinced that it will be a hell of a car and that it will kick some serious "ars".

Patiently waiting.

Well, I know I said I was going to get one, no questions asked, but with that hot Concept RA making it's debut next month, I am going to hold out and see what that's all about.
Of course, if Mitsubishi goes belly up in North America, that gorgeous prospect will go up in smoke.

The X is nice, but c'mon.....it's not $40K nice, and that's US pricing........that's BMW territory.
I know that's the market Mitsubishi was aiming for with this car, but I dunno if they will be able to pull it off.

I want an RS4.

yeah, all of them! Hard to believe a salesman would say that. crazy

From the posted specs about the Evo, the Canadian version is a couple inches longer. That says to me that they still hadn't quite made the bumpers fit Cdn standards, so they've modified them. That also says to me that we're not going to be able to import one from the US. $34k is less than a WRX here, and I'd willingly pay $39k + duty for the SST. But, I'm not paying +$50k for either Evo, when I can get an STI (that's faster around the track) for $47k (based on last years pricing. but the WRX actually dropped by $2500 this year, so I'm hoping STI pricing does too).

Guess we'll see once transport Canada figures everything out, and the Cdn pricing is finally released on the Suby and the Mitsu.

Sorry, just reread my last post. I'm refering to the 1995 for $36K, not the X...

15,000 Evo's in Canada in the first year? I seriously doubt there'll be that many in the US, let alone Canada. Maybe 1000 cars in Canada, if they're lucky. I think your source of information should check his source. Sales people will say anything. Most of them have no idea what's really happening, and are among the last to know anything.

Mitsubishi sold less than 12,000 total vehicles in Canada last year. If they can sell more than 300 Evolutions here in the first year then they will probably exceed their own expectations.

Their beancounters are probably saying the reason they never brought the WRX/EVO to North America in the first place is that Americans are too lazy to want raw rally cars over the Asians/Japanese. Won't even enter into their one-track brains that the costs are too high to justify.

These prices seem about right, although they should be lower. Once again, when you're SERIOUSLY considering a purchase and you see what Audi, BMW, etc. offer for the same price or just a bit more, things get a bit hazy.

Any idea how much Nissan will ask for the GT-R?

Pricing for the GT-R in the USA has been announced as $69,850 for the base model, and $71,900 for the premium model. So with the Canadian dollar virtually at par with the greenback, we can expect the usual 25% price premium and I predict the Canadian prices will start around $87,000.

And if you think I'm kidding, 25% is the price premium Canadians pay over the Americans for the all-new Nissan Rouge SUV. This being a new model with no issues regarding legacy residual values of leased vehicles, one of the common defenses car makers use to explain Canadian price disparities.
