oK so this time, when going to start the car, it starts, but the whole car sputters and vibrates like a bitch, then dies. It also smells like unburnt gas, some one told me you get that smell when it isnt firing in one of the cylinders. WTF could the problem be? frown

My first thoughts are to try to hook up a datalogger to your ECU. If it doesn't connect, the ECU is toast.

If you are getting fuel and no spark, ECU seems to be it. Fuel and spark go hand in hand. Can't be the MPI (engine fuse), probably not a CAS.

If it's not the ECU, then it could be a coil pack.

Either way, next time make sure all your grounds are solidly connected to the chassis when you start to drive it again.

Check the caps in your ECU.

OK, i was told that i may have melted the piston rings...i pulled out the plugs and the ones in #2 and #3 cyl. were fouled...so bought 4 new ones, put them in, then turned the car over a couple times(wouldnt start) then pulled the plugs again and the same 2 plugs were BLACK... so i was told this is what happens when the rings go. Well its at the mechanic now, so i'll know for sure what it is soon

There are two coils in the coil pack.
One is for cyl 1 & 4, the other is for 2 & 3.
Your symptoms could indicate that one of the coils is not firing.

Check for spark in each cylander by turning the engine over while the wire is pulled off of the plug. If there is spark, you'll see it grounding to the valve cover.

And who is it that jumped to the conclusion that your rings are fried? Is this the mechanic that has your car? I think they want your money too, and a lot of it. Beware.

Hmmmm..... this sounds similar to my problem.

My car will turn over, but there's no spark in any of the 4 plugs. I'm hearing it could be the ECU or the coil pack, but not likely the cam angle sensor??

How do I test the ECU??

Thanks,

Dan

But, I do not have a check engine light illuminated. It states "There will be a diagnostic code inside the ECU (Electronic Control Unit) if and only if the 'Check Engine' light on the lower left portion of the dash is illuminated." So now what??

Just talked to the mechanic and he said the problem wasnt the rings, but the 2 cylindars still arnt firing. SO should i give him the list of things to check that everyone gave me. And has anyone else thought of what it could be?

It's probably the coil pack.
You should be able to find one pretty cheap on here or at the wreckers.
You can test a new one without installing it - just move all connections to the new coil pack and try it out.

Dan I guess they havent got to the chapter on crap doesnt always work like the engineer thought it should when they wrote the manual. wink You can have error codes without the CE light coming on so it is still a good idea to check.
